Slow Summer Days

No posting for quite a while for me. Just simply nothing to report on. I've been out of work for a month now, and have, simply, been enjoying the relaxation. I've read 5 books, drank much beer, kept up the house, and just recently began getting serious about what I'm going to do as the next phase of my career.

I've also taken in two excellent concerts. Last Thursday I went to see the Eels. Outstanding. They must have played 25 or 30 songs in their 2 hour set. Rapid fire great music and witty off-the-cuff banter from Mark Everett. On Monday, I went to see The Mountain Goats at a great venue, The Doug Fir Lounge. It's a basement performance space below the great bar I blogged about on St. Patrick's Day. Anyway, the space holds 300 people and it was an intimate affair. Great stuff from John Darnielle. You can download some live songs from the web site to get a taste of his style.

Tomorrow we head to Maine for almost 2 weeks to enjoy lots of beach time, family time and BEER. Yeeah!

I hope your summer is going well. Unless something crazy happens in Maine, I'm taking a 2 week hiatus from the blog. Check back July 7 or 8 for new content.

Cheers.

Oh, and I posted some pictures from my sister's reception in Corydon, Indiana. And, my good friend, MSL, sent Grady and Liam Dartmouth t-shirts since I faithfully wore my Dartmouth sweatshirt in high school at least twice a week. I sent him pictures of them in their new shirts.

Steve, Don't Eat It!

A can't miss post by Steve, the author of the excellent blog, The Sneeze (linked to on the right). If you've not seen his series, entitled, "Steve, Don't Eat It!," you must stop by NOW. He eats disgusting things and writes up his experiences. His 8th Edition involves making, and drinking, Prison Wine, complete with moldy bread, dirty socks, ketchup and fruit snacks. If that tickles your funny bone, click through to his previous 7 editions. Some involve him making libations with his wife's breast milk, eating decade old cereal, and piecing together the hide of a pig, puzzle-style, from a jar of moist pig skin snacks.

Slugs

A slugging we will go, a slugging we will go,
Heigh ho, the dairy-o, a slugging we will go.

Last night I put down some Corry's Slug and Snail Death around flowers slugs have been decimating lately. A total of about 6 cup fulls around the yard netted 40 dead slugs overnight. The slick trail they left as they tried to dimwittedly outrun the poison in their bellies demonstrate the tenacity of these little creatures. One of these trails was 15 feet long, down a bark-dusted hill and across the sidewalk.

Supremely satisfying for me.

Update

Just a quick update lest you think I've given up on blogging. I'm ending my second week unemployed, and I've sure taken a liking to it. The days fly by unexpectedly. I guess having to leave at 4:30 everyday to pick up the kids from school (daycare) kind of puts a cap on my lazy days. Having that hanging over me sort of keeps me unsettled. But, I wouldn't trade having that minor distraction for the major headaches I had at my old job.

I'm just about ready to go head first into making sure an idea of mine is a viable business opportunity. I'm not sharing it broadly yet, but if it starts to get off the ground, I'm sure it will consume my blog postings for the foreseeable future.

For Memorial Day Weekend, I traveled to Corydon, Indiana for my sister's delayed reception. She had a small wedding back in February, and held a big party in her husband's home town this past weekend. About 150 showed to the local country club for lots of drinking and dancing. That was Sunday night. Friday night a group of young and good looking folks headed to Louisville (about 25 miles away) to take in the local bars and play some bar games. Saturday the men went golfing, which rekindled my interest in the game, and then about 40 people gathered at Erik's parent's GORGEOUS home for a bbq which stretched into the wee hours of the night. I won $100 in poker, but hardly remember it.

Click pictures for full views. I'll have a more comprhensive album up soon.

Cake cutting:

The cake's cut, now what?

Corydon is a small town, but full of great people and beautiful homes. Erik's family seems to be one of the best known and loved families in the town, so I kind of felt like royalty just being around them. What gracious and fun hosts his family is.

One small nit unrelated to the above subjects. I've noticed that drivers here in Oregon have gotten a lot ruder. I used to boast to visitors how nice Portlanders are, as evidenced by how courteous drivers are at 4-way stops. No longer. Every day I have someone cheat and cut in line. I plow forward each time and stop within inches of their car and lay on the horn. It scares them, and hopefully makes them understand they are not the most important people on this planet. That, and hopefully the person on the other end of their fucking cell phone will ask them what's happening. Grrrr.
